Planning Sweet Sixteen Party

Start planning a couple of months before the party.  The first and most important part of planning is to find out how your birthday boy or girl wants their big day to be celebrated.

A video of your child in diapers on a mega screen may seem sweet to you and your friends but could be a nightmare to your teen. Your job is to find that out before the party. Be sensitive to the fact that a bit of anxiety may come along with the planning of your child’s first adult party. Ask for a list of things that they do not want. This is a good time to let your teen know your boundaries as well, so that both of you can agree on the length, and tone of the party.

Teens are still learning social skills, a party that involves activities, such as dancing, games, and interactions will always make everyone feel comfortable.  A pre-party day out with her closest friends to have nails or hair done can also ease the party jitters.

Setting a budget not only protects your wallet, but it involves your teen in grown up decisions.  There are so many great choices available. You may not be able to afford the MTV bash they envision. Break down the elements. Exactly what are the key points that made that party special to your teen? Custom lighting can work magic on a backyard, living room or rented hall. A DJ is an option; however you may cut corners by having your teen make a playlist. If you can’t afford a self- service photo booth, you can create one with a table filled with simple props and one person to snap photos.  This is the perfect job for a classmate or friend who may need a little help getting involved.  It is possible to create a perfect sweet 16 on almost any budget.

Save the surprise party for later. This is one party where working together can be a wonderful rite of passage for both of you.
